Sensient Beauty is committed to behaving responsibly by integrating social and environmental concerns into its business operations. This is critical to us, to our customers and consumers.
Corporate & Social Responsibility
To ensure that we continue to make progress and focus our efforts, we have set specific targets under each of our four sustainability pillars.
- Reduce consumption of non-renewable energy and reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, with the objective of reaching zero carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions by 2050.
- Improve water efficiencies and decrease water consumption, prioritizing sites in high-stress areas.
- Reduce waste and apply the principles of a circular economy.
- Build a sustainable supply chain that fully integrates ethical and environmentally responsible practices.
We know that none of this will be easy, but we face this challenge with a proactive mindset. We will make investments in energy-efficient and electrified production equipment, adapt our manufacturing processes, and continue to look for technologies that are not currently viable to scale or do not yet exist. We will source as much power from sustainable sources as is financially and physically feasible.

Reduce consumption of non-renewable energy and reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, with the objective of reaching zero carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions by 2050.
Scope 1: Direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from Sensient activities. Our most significant Scope 1 emissions are those from the combustion of fossil fuels to run our dryers and boilers.
Scope 2: Emissions resulting from grid-sourced power generation attributable to Sensient because we are buying and consuming that power. These are harder to address because we do not control the power grid that serves our facilities.
Scope 3: All non-Scope 1 or Scope 2 emissions attributable to Sensient, including the emissions of our suppliers, employees, and customers. These are the hardest emissions to measure, address, and reduce.
Strategic Initiatives
The following strategic initiatives will enable us to reach our emission reductions goals by 2035, paving the way for zero CO2e emissions by 2050:
- Aligning reduction targets with the SBTi.
- Partner with an energy efficiency consultant.
- Reduce energy consumption by at least 2% annually in accordance with our 2035 reduction goals through improved energy and production efficiencies.
- Change equipment and production processes to utilize green(er) technologies.
- Conduct a baseline assessment and tracking process for Scope 3 emissions.
- Increase share of electrical power consumed from renewable sources.
- Implement a cost of carbon analysis in all CAPEX.
- Choose green(er) transportation options for shipment of goods (long-term).
- Explore “natural climate solutions” (NCS) (long-term).
- Explore carbon capture and storage (CCS) options (long-term).
- Create a defined annual Sustainability CAPEX budget to accomplish these goals.
“THE BUSINESS OF BUSINESS SHOULD NOT BE ABOUT MONEY. IT SHOULD BE ABOUT RESPONSIBILITY. IT SHOULD BE ABOUT PUBLIC GOOD, NOT PRIVATE GREED.” – Anita Roddick
Improve water efficiencies and decrease water consumption, prioritizing sites in high-stress areas.
Once we assess our baseline water usage and determine the opportunities for water use reduction, we will develop the following two reduction targets:
- Reduce overall water withdrawal by 20% by 2030.
- Reduce water withdrawal by 20% in high- or extremely high-risk areas by 2030.
Strategic Initiatives
- Integrate water reduction and efficiency improvements considerations in all CAPEX project assessments.
- Conduct water consumption audits at each production facility.
- Increase recycling and reuse of water.
- Make production processes less water intensive.
Reduce waste and apply the principles of a circular economy.
- Reduce hazardous waste generation by 10% by 2025 (existing goal).
- Achieve Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWL) status 50% of major manufacturing facilities by 2035.
- Utilize 100% recycled packaging by 2035.
- Reduce obsolete/unusable inventory by 10-50% each year depending on the site.
Strategic Initiatives
- Conduct a Company-wide baseline assessment of all nonhazardous waste and develop a recording process and system to track all relevant waste streams.
- Integrate waste reduction and upcycling considerations in CAPEX project assessments.
- Recycle and upcycle as much waste as possible with the objective to establish Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWL) facilities where possible.
- Integrate circular design principles into R&D practices at the earliest stages of design.
Build a sustainable supply chain that fully integrates ethical and environmentally responsible practices.
- Engage all suppliers who contribute to 80% of total spend through CDP, EcoVadis, or internally developed questionnaire by 2023. Our goal is to engage suppliers through this platform that contribute to 80% of our supplier spend; this currently equates to about 150 suppliers for the Flavor and Extract Group and Color Group combined.
- 100% of suppliers signing the Supplier Code of Conduct by 2023.
- 100% of high-risk forest commodities (e.g., palm oil) have full traceability to source by 2025.
Strategic Initiatives
- Adopt new Supplier Code of Conduct and track supplier compliance.
- Establish new audit system for suppliers.
- Require our top suppliers to complete the 2022 CDP Supply Chain Questionnaire, EcoVadis, or internally developed questionnaire by June 30, 2022.
- Source ingredients sustainably while preserving biodiversity.
- Through SNI and our Agronomy Program, require partner farmers to complete the General Mills Regenerative Agriculture Self-Assessment.
- Choose green(er) suppliers; insist on suppliers taking measures to reduce energy consumption.
