Talc has many uses in cosmetics and other personal care products. For example, it may be used to absorb moisture, to prevent caking, to make facial makeup opaque, or to improve the feel of a product.
Published scientific literature going back to the 1960s has suggested a possible association between the use of powders containing talc in the genital area and the incidence of ovarian cancer. However, these studies have not conclusively demonstrated such a link, or if such a link existed, what risk factors might be involved*.
Nevertheless, there has been increase on the law suit in the United States related to talc-containing products. Most of these law suits are related to the asbestos content in the talc products which correlates to its carcinogenicity.
At Sensient, we test every batch of talc-containing products for asbestos content, and asbestos is not detected in it.
However, to respond to the growing trend on replacing talc with better received ingredients, we decided to rationalize our talc-containing products and developed talc alternatives.
