It’s one of the hottest makeup trends for 2019: Yoga skin.
When U.K.-based makeup artist Sara Hill brought this radiant, luscious concept to Instagram, the look instantly caught on with consumers. After all, who wouldn’t want a glow like this?
Those who practice yoga might notice how hydrated their skin appears after a session. It’s the visual, very-real effect of the calmness and wellness you feel from an intense workout. Replicating yoga skin with makeup brings the same appeal—using products in place of poses, of course.
What Yoga Skin Is
“Yoga skin is a look that feels real,” Hill explained to Glamour. “I called it ‘yoga skin’ because it emulates that really gorgeous radiance you have when you step out of the yoga studio; juicy, dewy and super-hydrated.”
“Lit from within” is another term Hill uses, emphasizing complexion over concealment. “Healthy, glowing, hydrated, radiant, sheer, and natural. Skin that looks like skin at its very best,” she wrote in her Instagram tutorial.
What Yoga Skin Isn’t
While the process for achieving yoga skin (we’ll explain shortly) might appear tedious in terms of the steps involved, it’s actually quite simple and the makeup is by no means piled on.
“It’s not about hiding imperfections but creating a hyper-real version of your natural skin, pinchable and just irresistible!” Hill told Glamour. “Of course, imperfections can be masked and blemishes can be disguised, but skin can only really look amazing if it’s nourished, healthy and cared for.”
Emulating the Post-Yoga Glow
A dewy look usually means less makeup is more. Yoga skin, however, requires several products:
- Primer
- Liquid foundation
- Facial oil
- Liquid highlighter
- Concealer
“Cocktailing,” or mixing, these products eliminates the need for a beauty blender. Instead, yoga skin starts with applying regular skincare and letting it settle in. Then comes primer, followed by the desired mixture of foundation, facial oil and highlighter. This “skin mix”—which is very customizable—is massaged into the skin using the hands.
“This does many things,” Hill wrote in her tutorial. “It gets the circulation flowing, relaxes you, de-puffs…”
Lastly, a small amount of concealer can be added to areas needing extra coverage.
“The best part of ‘yoga skin’ is that this dewy look is gorgeous with minimal eye and lip makeup, but it works well with more color and intensity, too,” Allure writes.
Which Products Work Best for Yoga Skin?
Whenever a natural appearance is created using cosmetics, formulation can make or break both the look and the experience. For example, Sensient’s Nat’vocado Lightweight Full Cover Foundation provides the soft, creamy, natural texture sought in a yoga skin mix.
Our Natural Soy Infused Powder Foundation has a similar effect, with a slight matte finish to achieve a dewy appearance without crossing into the realm of oily. Meanwhile, Dew Drop Serum releases instant moisture when applied to the skin.
