Consumers are increasingly seeking cosmetics made with natural ingredients; a report from Kline & Company forecasts U.S. consumption of botanical actives in personal care products to reach $168.5 million by 2021, up from $140.5 million in 2016.
Among the most touted botanical actives are antioxidants. Ginkgo, lemon, olive leaf, pomegranate…the list goes on, but one stands out as perhaps the best-known: green tea. What makes the ancient beverage so popular today—not just in cafes, but also in cosmetics?
Topical Benefits of Green Tea
Kline & Company explains that green tea, rich in polyphenols, is an effective radical scavenger, or molecule that works to protect cells against damaging free radicals. From their report:
“[Green tea] protects skin against UV damage, which in turn helps in preventing premature aging of the skin. It contains antioxidants and has anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties. It is used in several skincare products, such as facial creams, moisturizers, eye creams, night creams, facial serums, anti-aging treatment products, and sun protection products. It is used in hair care products, such as shampoos and conditioners, as a repairing and protective agent.”
Our in-vitro research at Sensient Cosmetic Technologies found green tea to be as effective as vitamin E in antioxidant power, shown by an 80 percent reduction in sunburn cells. Additionally, green tea significantly increased filaggrin, known to hydrate skin.
Proper Extraction
To achieve the clinical benefits suggested above and those of other botanical actives, Sensient uses a proprietary, solvent-free, water-based extraction method called PhytoClean™. Sub-critical water alters the polarity of water to mimic solvent polarities such as ethanol and acetone, yielding a unique extraction of rich active molecules. See how PhytoClean™ bridges the gap between solvent, eco-friendly and CO2 extraction.
Sustainable Sourcing
When formulating with natural ingredients, it is also important to consider the means by which they are obtained. Consumers want products that are clean, powerful, and ethical.
